What Is Passive House Construction?

Passivhaus is a standard for building construction. A Passive House offers a high level of comfort while using very little energy for heating and cooling. They are deisgned and constructed with meticulous attention to detail in line with principles developed by the Passivhaus Institute in Germany

Why Build A Passive House?

A passive house will reduce your heating bills by Approximately 85%.compared with current building regulations, by purely passive means i.e. a super insulated envelope with extremely low airtightness. The process and end product is a sustainable one which will reduce carbon emissions and preserve fossil fuels For the lifetime of the building A passive house has no draughts and will be evenly warm with a constant climate.

Criteria of a passive house

The Passive House Institute in Darmstadt defines the criteria for a Passive House as follows:
  • Annual heating ≤ 15 kWh / (m2 a)
  • Heating load ≤ 10 W / m2
  • Airtightness n50 ≤ 0.60 / h
  • Primary energy demand ≤ 120 kWh / (m2a) (including all electrical loads)
  • Limiting external fabric values of 0.15W/m2K
  • Glazing values of ≤ 0.8 W/m2K

A Passive House certified by the Passive House Institute in Darmstadt must have been designed with by a certified Passive House designer PHPP (Passive House Planning Package) software and the building must be certified post completion by a Passive House approved certifier.
