Thin Joint Systems

Thin joint blockwork is a fast-build Modern Method of Construction that can be used across any type of new build project. The system uses dimensionally accurate elements which are bonded using a quick-setting thin joint mortar. There are three distinct systems which use thinjoint mortar:

1.  Aircrete blocks
2.  Aircrete panels
3.  Calcium silicate blocks

The choice of material is based on thermal requirements, structural requirements, speed of build.

Using aircrete blocks with thinjoint the shell of a house can be completed ready for roofing in five to six days compared to the four to six weeks required with conventional construction brickwork methods.

The mortar is a pre-mixed cement-based product that only requires the addition of water to produce an easily applied mortar, giving joints of 3mm or less. The quick-setting properties of the mortar eliminate any restriction on the height of walls that can be built in a day.

The thin joint system can be used in a number of applications including the inner leaf of cavity walls, party walls and partitions as well as external solid walls.

• Greater productivity - Larger block sizes and quick setting mortar speed up the build process.
• Quicker build - Less time spent on sent reduce costs. The thin joint process is around twice as quick to lay as conventional blocks.
• Reduced waste – the use of mechanical or hand saws allows for more accuracy, creating less waste. Typically just 20 bags of Thinset mortar will be enough to construct the inner leaf of the average family home. This means less transport costs and less site storage
• Less storage - Up to 80% less mortar materials eliminates the need for bulk sand and cement storage on site.
• Improved thermal performance - Combination of low permeability blocks and thin joint mortar allows for significantly improved airtightness.
